Our Disney Face Masks Make Us Smile

Due to the Pandemic, we cancelled our Disney trip this summer.  It was a week at Wilderness Lodge, my favorite Disney resort.  Yesterday I cancelled our Disney Merrytime cruise for this December, our annual Christmas tradition.  For me, these Merrytime cruises are too expensive to not have the full cruise experience.  So much planned Disney fun now gone. But there is one Disney experience we can still have – Disney face masks!  Our masks arrived in the mail yesterday, and we are so excited.

Mask Matters

Here in SE Texas, masks are required. We started out with basic black fabric face masks, the kind Asian girls wear.  My daughter, who loves all things Asian, already had several.  Since face masks were hard to get when the pandemic started, we were lucky we already had those.  After a few months of use, and washing, they were starting to wear out.  By then, the demand for face masks had subsided some, so I was able to order some of the blue disposable masks at a reasonable price.  These blue disposable masks work, but they have no personality.  However, they are great if you want to go incognito – wear one of those masks, a baseball cap and sunglasses, and no one will know it’s you.  🙂

Mask Up, Disney Style

Since we need to wear masks anyway, we might as well wear masks that have some style.  I wanted some that reflected my slightly offbeat personality.  And I’m a Disney nut.  So back in May when I saw that Disney was selling face masks, I knew I had to have some.  I went straight to ShopDisney (aka the Disney Store online) to order our Disney face masks. However, they were only available for pre-order, to be shipped in late June.  I was disappointed but I decided to skip the pre-order and just order them in late June when I assumed they would be available.

Around the last week of June, I went to ShopDisney to order the masks.  But they were not available.  Once again, they were only available for pre-order, to be shipped July 25.  WTH??  Either the entire inventory sold out in days, or these masks are only available by pre-order.  So, I pre-ordered a set for my daughter and myself.  If I didn’t pre-order them, I was afraid we would never get them. (FYI, I checked the ShopDisney website on July 25, and they were still only available for pre-order, this time to be shipped in late August.  I guess they keep selling out.)

We anxiously awaited the arrival of our Disney face masks.  Our lives are pretty uneventful right now.  We rarely leave the house.  A delivery of any kind is big excitement here. 🙂   In the meantime, we continued to use the disposable blue face masks when we went anywhere.  They are functional.  But they are not fun.

Our Disney Face Masks Finally Arrive!

So yesterday when the Disney face masks arrived, we couldn’t wait to see them. There are about 8 different sets of masks to choose from. The set we ordered had the mouths and noses of 4 Disney characters – Mickey Mouse (of course), Winnie the Pooh, Stitch, and Marie the cat.  We ripped the bag open and inspected the masks.  They are better than I expected.  I’m not sure if they are 2 or 3 layers thick.  There is an outer layer of cloth that has the design, and a layer that’s a liner, and possibly another layer in between.  The liner is designed to go against the face, and is softer and smoother than the outer layer.

We ordered a size Large, and all masks are marked as Large, but the actual mask size is not consistent.  My daughter and I tried all 4 masks on, and 2 are clearly bigger than the other 2.  Fortunately, my daughter has a smaller face than I do, so the sizing worked out for us.  She took the 2 smaller masks, Pooh and Stitch, which were her first choice any way.  That left me with the Mickey and Marie masks, but that’s fine as they are larger and fit me better.  And I love all the characters.

I don’t know why the mask sizing is so inconsistent.  It worked out for us, but may not work out for everyone. I have an average size face.  If you have a round face, these masks may not fit you.  And I doubt they would fit larger men at all.  I noticed many of the reviews mentioned the masks were small.  Maybe there is an attempt to make them larger, but not everyone got the memo.  I also noticed that the current pre-orders have an Extra Large size as an option.  Just know if you plan to order these Disney masks that they run small.  And not all Larges are the same.

Aside from the sizing issue, which worked out for us, we love these Disney face masks. They are comfortable, they are fun and putting one on brightens my mood.  I have mine sitting across from my work area, so I see them each time I look up.  They make me smile, just like Mickey’ smile on the mask itself.  These Disney face masks are playful, and a touch of whimsy to an otherwise dark situation.  I’ve masked up since the pandemic started.  Now, I mask up in style!
