Its International Cat Day
International Cat Day is celebrated each year on August 8th. Yes, a whole day devoted to our furry feline friends. It’s a day to celebrate, love, and revel in these amazing animals. Join us as we take part in a day packed with educational and fun activities that provides an opportunity for us to indulge in our shared love of cats.
International Cat Day was established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare as a day to raise awareness for cats and learn about ways to help and protect them. Since then, many other organizations, individuals, and nations have joined in the new tradition of honoring our feline friends.
This year’s theme is Making Happy Cats – Promoting happiness through understanding. According to International Cat Care website, the non-profit that sponsors International Cat Day, this day will unite cat lovers across the globe in a celebration of cats. It will provide an opportunity to share our passion for cats and learn more about this fascinating species. The day will highlight that there is no ‘one size fits all’, and just as there are cats that thrive as pets, others will never adapt to living alongside humans, no matter how much love we give them. Cats are individuals and this International Cat Day we want all cats to be happy cats – pets as well as unowned, indoor and outdoor, pedigree and mutt.
Let’s Celebrate Happy Cats on International Cat Day
I am a cat person. I’ve always loved cats. At 17, I rescued my first cat, and I’ve been doing it ever since. Over the years, we had many cats – many rescued, some born in our house – all loved as our fur babies. We’ve had some kittens we bottle fed, and quite a few we nursed back to health. Some we lost, despite our best efforts. But all this has taught me one thing – life is better with cats! So please join us as we celebrate our fabulous felines on their special day.
Celebrate this day devoted to cats with fellow cat lovers at https://internationalcatday.org. A full program of online activities awaits all friends of felines to help all cat lovers celebrate and learn more about cats. The featured lineup includes The Animal Chat Podcast, the Cat Garden Awards, a Q and A session busting some common myths about cat allergens, and even Cat Yoga and a #Happy Cat Cocktail Hour.
Take the #HappyCat Challenge. How do you know when a cat is happy? Is it a contented purr, a tell-tale meow, a twitching tail, a cat stretch or something unique to your feline friend? Do the International Cat Day #HappyCat Challenge by taking a photo of your cat at their most contented. Share it on social media using the hashtag #HappyCat #InternationalCatDay tagging @iCatCare and challenge all your cat loving friends and family to join in too!
Social Media Takeover
Show your love of cats with a cat takeover! From Twibbons to Facebook frames and Instagram gifs, let #International Cat Day take over your social media. I’ve never tried a Twibbon before, so that one should be interesting. My daughter has been taking videos and pics of our cats all week in anticipation of International Cat Day, so be sure to check out my social media to see our fluffy furballs.
All of the festivities take place on the International Cat Day website, at www.internationalcatday.org, and their social media. My cats and I will be there. Join us for all the furry feline fun! Log on Saturday, 8 August to share the love, learn more and laugh together in celebration of International Cat Day.
